"Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people whom he has chosen as his heritage!" -Psalm 33:12
We are one week from Independence Day. It is a day when our forefathers threw off the rule of England and declared themselves to be a free nation. It took more than a declaration to make it stick. The colonists would have to fight off the greatest empire of the time in order to secure their freedom, but when they did and the new nation came to be there came the task of deciding this new nation's identity.
Almost from the beginning, God was looked to as the provider of this new nation. From the earliest colonists to those who were there for the first steps in becoming a nation to those who have come since, God has been revered as the Lord of our nation.
However, since the beginning there have been those who wish to throw off God in the same way those colonists threw of England. It has taken followers of Christ from leadership positions to grass-root movements to continue to remember that it is "In God We Trust."
I can't help but think that this verse refers to families and individuals as well. As we go through our lives, there are those who tell us to turn away from God or to be your own god. If we stay the course we will see the "the Lord brings the counsel of the nations to nothing; he frustrates the plans of the people." (Psalm 33:10) The error of turning from God to do my own thing will become evident in those who try to encourage me to follow them.
The great part of Psalm 33:12 is not only that we are blessed, but we are chosen! God chose to love us. He chose to send His Son to die for us that we may become His nation, His people who are His heritage. There is no one else who can claim that.
This week as you put out flags, light fireworks, and go to barbecues remember to thank God for this nation where we can worship God as we please. But also pray for this nation that America would continue to keep God as Lord that His blessing may continue to pour down on us.
