Assimilate This

We have been looking at the tongue the past few days, but you know what they say "Garbage in, Garbage out". So today we need to look at our intake organ- the ear.

I don't know about you, but I am an "assimilater". If I am around people for a long enough time I begin to exhibit their traits. Now not in some weird "Why is my hair somehow blonde?" or "How long have I been right-handed?" sort of way. I start to pick up their mannerisms and way of speech. Therefore I have to be careful about being around someone who has undesirable characteristics or I may do or say something that is not who I want to be. Paul says it this way, "Bad company corrupts good morals."

Therefore I want to spend most of my time around those who will nurture those "good morals", or as Solomon writes those who provide "life-giving rebukes". Read the full verse:

"One who listens to life-giving rebukes

will be at home among the wise." --Proverbs 15:31

In other versions it says, "The ear that listens". We need to give ear to the rebuke of the wise, realizing that it will bring us wisdom and therefore will give us the attractive knowledge to spread. In other words, "The one who walks with the wise will become wise, but a companion of fools will suffer." (Proverbs 13:20)

With whom will you give ear today? With whom will you spend your time walking this week? Or whose traits do you want to assimilate? If it is Jesus Christ's, then find those who will help you do that.
