A Willing Heart

"Defend the cause of the weak and the fatherless;

maintain the rights of the poor and oppressed.

Rescue the weak and needy;

deliver them from the hand of the wicked."

--Psalm 82:3-4

God has a heart for the poor and oppressed. I know because I have seen how He has shown His heart to others and caused them to have a heart for the poor and oppressed as well.

Last year when I went to Haiti I was able to meet several people- Haitian and American- to whom God has given a heart for the poor and oppressed. This heart was manifested in buying mattresses for families who slept on only metal springs. It came through in people helping to pour cement floors for families that lived in houses with only dirt floors where disease could reside. It was shown through a young man buying medicine for a woman who had a condition that without the medicine, fluid would build up around her heart and she would die. It was shown in the Haitians who ran orphanages for children whose parents were unable to care for them and gave them away to others who could and would.

All of these were there because God had placed them there to be His heart and hands to the weak and needy in need of rescue. Without these Christians whom God had called the plight of these poor and oppressed would be impossible to overcome. But God the defender and rescuer sent His people to meet the need.

Where are you needed today? Where has God placed you to "defend the cause of the weak and fatherless", to "maintain the rights of the poor and oppressed", and to "rescue the weak and needy?" They are all around you.

You may never get to go to Haiti and see what goes on there first-hand, but neither will those Haitians ever be here where you live to see what you see every day. You are the one God has put right where you are. My prayer is that you and I will be able to have God's heart to help others in need.

All it takes is a willing and compassionate heart.
